I’m finally back home, with my computer, and I’ve missed a bit in the last few days.
Terry Glenn’s knee issues apparently are a little more than just a little knock, as he had to have his knee scoped Wednesday to remove a cyst from the right knee. He won’t be back in action for about a couple of weeks, so he’ll miss at least next week’s preseason opener against Indy.
Bad news for him, good news for Sam Hurd, who’s taken advantage of the increased reps to continue to put on an impressive camp performance. T.O. joined Glenn on the sidelines Wednesday since he was in need of a rest day, so that meant even more action for Hurd. Patrick Crayton is still no doubt the #3 receiver, but Hurd’s hold on the #4 spot have tightened, and he’s certainly proving himself worthy of seeing more balls his way this season. As is, you’ve got to feel good about the receivers if your #3 and #4 guys can come in and get the job done if one of the top two guys is out.
Also, the Greg Ellis saga has continued on into this week. Ellis isn’t a happy man these days, about not having any assurances with his contract situation, about his nagging injury issues, about a rookie vying for his starting spot. He’s commented on his unhappiness, and even hinted at retirement.
For now, he should just cool down a little and focus on getting healthy and back on the field. He’s supposed to be a big part of Dallas’ defensive success this season, even with Spencer in the mix. A lot of his feelings right now might just be out of frustration about not being where he wants to be, and it’s understandable. Few people would be feeling peachy in his situation. But, if anything, he just needs to focus on making sure he’s healthy, and be the player he’s capable of, and everything will take care of itself, one way or another.
But, with Jerry Jones taking the time to comment a little about the situation the other day, that might turn down the heat a little. The earliest you’ll see any move by Jones is likely after the season, and rightfully so. Ellis is still injured, and while it’d be a nice show of faith to give him some assurances, you’ve got to understand how it’s being played. You know what he’s capable of as a player, but he’s coming back from a serious injury, and you’ve got a promising young talent in the same position.
So, the best thing right now, is for people to stop stirring the pot by bringing the issue up, and for Ellis himself to just focus on the right things. It might be hard to, but it’s the best thing.
